Portugal visas

There are two (2) types of visa to enter Portugal:
- Short-stay Schengen visas
- Long-term National Visas
Which visa suits each situation?
If you intend to travel to Portugal for: tourism; family visit; business prospecting, development of commercial contacts, meetings or consultations or medical treatments lasting less than ninety (90) days - you must apply for a Schengen Visa .
If you intend to travel for periods longer than ninety (90) days, you can apply for a National Visa , which may be for Residence or Temporary Stay.
Schengen visas
The Schengen Visa is an authorization issued by a Member State for the purpose of an airport stopover, transit or the intention of staying for a short period in the territory of one or more Member States, allowing its holder to present himself at the external border, not guaranteeing, however, , the respective entry into the Schengen area, which will be decided by the border authorities upon arrival.
At the border, you may be asked to prove the reason for your trip to the Schengen Area and the conditions of stay, namely accommodation and sufficient means of subsistence for the stay and return.

Deadlines for submitting the application:
Requests must be submitted with a maximum of six (6) months and a minimum of fifteen (15) calendar days in advance in individual and duly justified cases.
Deadlines for decision
The decision on applications is taken within 15 calendar days from the date of submission of an admissible application.
The decision period is 45 days, in individual cases and when it is necessary to carry out a more in-depth examination of the request.
visa fees
A fee is payable for each visa application, which only refers to the processing of the visa application and does not imply the issuance of a visa or the refund of the amount charged in case of refusal.
The visa application is considered admissible after the applicable fee has been charged.
The rates in effect are as follows:
- General rate is 80 euros;
- Reduced rate is 40 euros for children from 6 and under 12 years old.
The reduced rate is also applied to nationals of countries with which the European Union has facilitation agreements: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia, Georgia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia and Ukraine.
The following are exempt from the payment of fees:
- Children under 6 years of age (on the date of delivery of the visa application);
- Students and teachers when traveling on study or training trips;
- Researchers traveling for the purpose of scientific research;
- Representatives of non-profit organizations up to 25 years of age who participate in seminars, conferences, cultural/sports events organized by non-profit organizations;
- Family members of nationals of EU Member States or Switzerland.
National Visas
National visas are intended for people who are going to travel to Portugal for periods longer than ninety (90) days. They are of two types:
- Temporary Stay Visa;
- Residence Visas.
Temporary Stay Visa
Temporary Stay Visa for stays lasting up to 1 year for the purposes of:

Residence Visas for stays lasting more than 1 year for the purposes of:
National Visa Fees
